Imam Ali Defines the True Measure of Shiism: Four Core Obligations Outlined in Nahj al-Balagha

A senior cleric at the Lady Masuma Shrine in the holy city of Qom has outlined four fundamental expectations set by Imam Ali, peace be upon him, for Shiites, stressing that true allegiance to the path of Imamate is reflected in action, ethics, and steadfast commitment rather than mere claims.

Hawzah News Agency- Speaking during a ceremony marking the birth anniversary of Imam Ali, peace be upon him, Hojatoleslam Mir Hashem Hosseini referred to sermons from Nahj al-Balagha, emphasizing the necessity of following the “Imam of Light” in both personal conduct and social responsibility. He said the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, clearly defined the standards by which a true Shiite is recognized.

According to the cleric, Imam Ali, peace be upon him, expects Shiites to adhere to four core principles: observing the rights of Allah and the rights of people, striving earnestly in work while serving the deprived and the oppressed, maintaining chastity and moral purity, and remaining steadfast and perseverant on the path of guardianship. “Whoever embodies these qualities is a true Shiite and a genuine follower of the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him,” he said.

Mir Hashem Hosseini noted that whenever the Messenger of God spoke openly about the status and leadership of Imam Ali, peace be upon him, the enemies of Islam intensified their efforts to distort the concept of Imamate and divert society from its original and divine course.

Citing narrations from Imam Reza, peace be upon him, he recalled that one of the unique distinctions of Imam Ali, peace be upon him, was revealed when the Prophet ordered the closure of doors opening into the mosque, exempting only the house of Imam Ali. He said this divine distinction triggered hostility among adversaries, who responded by spreading accusations and falsely claiming that the Prophet was acting based on personal desire rather than divine command.

The shrine speaker emphasized that throughout history, the movement of Imamate and guardianship has faced continuous attacks, with enemies attempting to portray both the Messenger of God and Imam Ali, peace be upon him, as misguided in order to weaken the foundations of divine leadership.

He added that the Prophet of Islam consistently sought to introduce and reinforce the guardianship of Imam Ali, peace be upon him, through numerous historic events, repeatedly reminding the Muslim community of the centrality of Imamate to the Islamic message.

Mir Hashem Hosseini also highlighted the exceptional spiritual status of Fatima bint Asad, the mother of Imam Ali, peace be upon him, noting that hadiths describe her as possessing unique qualities that earned her divine favor. He said she loved and supported the Prophet even before his mission, took full care of him, and was among the earliest believers—virtues that led God to grant her the honor of giving birth to the Commander of the Faithful.

“If individuals adopt these same qualities—faithfulness, sacrifice, and sincere support for the divine path—God will bless them and their future generations,” he said, calling on believers to take Fatima bint Asad as a role model in serving the school of Ahl al-Bayt, peace be upon them.

Referring again to Nahj al-Balagha, the seminary professor warned that every person follows an imam in life, whether an imam of light or an imam of fire. He stressed the need for vigilance to ensure that one’s beliefs, actions, and loyalties align with the path of divine guidance.

Concluding his remarks, Mir Hashem Hosseini reiterated that true loyalty to Imam Ali, peace be upon him, is demonstrated through responsibility, perseverance, moral integrity, and unwavering commitment to guardianship—principles that continue to define Shiite identity in the contemporary world.
